Does a lot of detectives.

Prairie Marymscriverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13567509503405689139noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11838465.post-91969357316054364962007-07-15T20:34:00.000-06:002007-07-15T20:34:00.000-06:00There are books specifically about Bror as well as...There are books specifically about Bror as well as Dennis Finch-Hatton. Of course, Elspeth Huxley, Beryl Markham, and others were also writing about the same location and there is overlap in their casts of characters, though the periods of time are slightly different.

Now I'm watching "In the Heat of the Day" with Trevor Eve, an actor I've noticed before but never really thought about. He played Dennis Finch-Hatton in a Beryl Markham-based film, but that casting isn't quite right either. Eve is a rather stocky, working-class type and all agree that Dennis was an aristocrat all the way. Of course, maybe what I'm seeing is acting. There's a Beryl Markham knock-off in this film, too. These small cloth-covered airplanes were wonderful. My uncles flew them on the North American prairie and yearned for them ever after. There must be a good history somewhere.

Prairie MaryMary Strachan Scriverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00538160009129822362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11838465.post-32504002513500133662007-07-15T20:07:00.000-06:002007-07-15T20:07:00.000-06:00Jake beat me to it: "White Mischief" definitely go...Jake beat me to it: "White Mischief" definitely goes with the others.

Funny how Bror hardly appears in Karen Blixen's book at all; his character seems invented for the film.Chas S. It looks good enough that I put it on my Netflix list.

The Ice Cream War will have to wait, but I'll put it on my list.

Prairie Marymscriverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13567509503405689139noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11838465.post-61986218424943073742007-07-09T06:29:00.000-06:002007-07-09T06:29:00.000-06:00I'll second Jake's recommendation of White Mischie...I'll second Jake's recommendation of White Mischief - a very different sort of moral code being teased apart, there. It's been some time since I last saw Out of Africa, and I could probably stand to watch it again. My strongest impression of it was that it felt like a 70's movie, with the Meryl Streep character discovering truths of the heart while attempting to set up a self-sufficient commune of sorts in the wilds of Africa (rather than the wilds of Alaska).

I'm sounding rather pissy about these love stories, aren't I? My biases are showing, I guess.Whisky Prajerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14076228013022881173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11838465.post-31519142156007767222007-07-07T10:59:00.000-06:002007-07-07T10:59:00.000-06:00A movie you need to see is "White Mischief" based ...A movie you need to see is "White Mischief" based on a scandal in the European colony in Kenya in the thirties.
And a book you would enjoy is The Ice Cream War - sorry, can't remember the author - about the interaction of the Brit-Kenyans and the German-Tanganyikans when the Great War broke out.
Love
JakeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
