Especially vivid are memories of a weekend trip we all took over to the Flatfeet in a white van filled with matresses so we could participate in their festivities.

For a while, that summer, I even had the opportunity of travelling throughout your region under the watchful eye of Jackie Kittson, who I met downtown each morning; then, after a day of adventures we'd return to town, I'd buy him dinner and we'd part companty until the next morning.

These days I devote my time to fretting over how humanity will "deal" with the challenges of global climate change and how we can engage policy makers in fact-based dialogs concerning the changing condition of our nation's ecosystems. I like to think that my insistence we look at these issues in a wholistic, long-term manner derives, in part, from what I learned from my new and wise friends that summer so long ago.

Please pass along my warmest greetings to Leland, and tell him that my beard is also white.

David Bernard (tricoptera_mi (at)hotmail.com)David P.
