Would love to read your opinion about this observation. The acting is superb, but understated. Bill Nighy deserved an Oscar for his totally believable portrayal of a man so shy and unsure of himself socially that he can barely function in the presence of other people. His nervous, stumbling attempts to relate to...and, yes, woo...Gina were perfect. One aspect of the film I’ve not seen commented on is the ending, when Gina is escorted to the airport by Lawrence, after having been quietly booted from the G-8 dinner for challenging the many powerful delegates to vote their hearts regarding the Millennium Development Goals as a means of reducing world poverty. At the airport, just as she is about to board the plane, Lawrence asks Gina directly why she had been sent to prison (Gina had confessed to Lawrence earlier in the day that she had only recently been released from several years of incarceration). Gina quietly says that it was because she killed a man because he had hurt a child. Lawrence, stunned, asks her if the child was hers. She answers, “Does it make a difference?” Suddenly, her seemingly brazen confrontations of the delegates at the G-8 conference make perfect sense, and the film, at the very end, takes on a whole new, deeper meaning. This is as close to a “perfect” movie as I’ve ever seen, I highly recommend it to everyone who doesn’t require gun fights, car chases and sex scenes to enjoy a film.luke meltonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11838465.post-73959406127692322462008-12-18T05:13:00.000-07:002008-12-18T05:13:00.000-07:00I've seen this movie before but only vaguely remem...I've seen this movie before but only vaguely remembered it. This time I am haunted by the power of it. Apart from the central message the movie is understated and highly moving. I feel his frustration and lonliness and to have his new found love ripped away for political correctness is crushing. While conviction to the agenda wins the day, its at a cost. I am profoundly moved by this move.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11838465.post-64475371268058161312008-12-14T15:16:00.000-07:002008-12-14T15:16:00.000-07:00Hey, thanks for a great review. I just love how Lawrence and Gina interact, and the plot somehow still seems relevant, and I suppose always will be.CabSav Lanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15945266962803509633noreply@blogger.com
